Introduction
Crystalline waterproofing uses cementitious binders combined with reactive chemicals that form insoluble crystals within concrete capillaries and pores. It can be applied as a surface slurry on the positive or negative side, or dosed as an integral admixture in fresh concrete. The mechanism reduces permeability and can self-seal micro-cracks.
Advantages
- Becomes part of concrete; no delamination
- Can self-seal fine cracks up to approximately 0.3 mm
- Positive- or negative-side applicability
- Simple brush application on prepared, SSD concrete
- Long service life when concrete remains moist
Limitations
- Rigid system; not suitable for dynamic movement
- Requires moist curing for performance
- May be less effective with fly-ash rich binders without dosage adjustment
- Relies on good-quality, well-cured concrete
- Not recommended as the sole system for deep basements under high head
Types
- Surface-applied crystalline slurry coatings
- Integral crystalline admixtures (powder added to mix)
- Crystalline mortars for joints, honeycombs, and repairs
Application / Method Statement (Summary)
- Slurry: Prepare substrate, ensure SSD condition, mix per datasheet, brush on two coats at right angles, moist-cure for minimum three days.
- Integral: Dose 0.8–1.2% by cement weight or as specified, ensure uniform batching plant mixing.
- Joints and details: Treat construction joints and defects with crystalline mortar and additional slurry.
Decision Guide
- Secondary waterproofing in rafts, walls, podium slabs → crystalline slurry
- Negative-side repairs where positive side is inaccessible → crystalline slurry with injection or surface coatings as needed
- New watertight concrete → integral crystalline admixture with quality concrete and curing practices
Acceptance criteria
SSD surface confirmed before slurry application. No curing compounds or contaminants.
Two-coat coverage achieved with crossing directions.
Moist curing maintained for minimum three days (or per datasheet).
Integral admixture dosing within specified percentage and properly mixed.
QA records captured. Coverage logs, curing logs, photos.
